Pesticide Collection for unwanted pesticide products

Southern States Cooperative, Inc., 117 N. Dogwood Ave., Siler City

Thursday, April 14, 2005, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

On Thursday, April 14, 2005 the Chatham County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service in conjunction with the Chatham County Waste Management Department and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Pesticide Section will hold a Pesticide Disposal Day.  The Pesticide Disposal Day will be held at Southern States Cooperative, Inc. – Siler City Service from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Farmers, gardeners, and homeowners with pesticides that they no longer use or need are encouraged to bring those containers to the disposal day.  This is a “no questions asked” disposal day.  NCDA&CS will not be question why you have a certain pesticide or why you want to get rid of it.

Pesticide is a term that encompasses any product that claims to control a pest such as insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and other “-cide” products.  If you have any of these products that you are no longer using and want to legally and safely dispose of them this is your opportunity.  On this collection day only home and farm pesticides will be collected.  This will not be a collection day for paint, oil or other solvents.  For disposal of these materials, please contact Chatham County Waste Management at 919.542.5516 or visit their website at http://www.chathamrecycles.com/program.html .

We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to legally and safely dispose of your unwanted or excess pesticides.  There is no charge for this service.  The collection day will last from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2005 at Southern States in Siler City.  No one should assume that there will be another opportunity like this anytime soon.  NCDA& CS personnel try to cover the entire state in 3 to 4 years.  It is usually at least that long before another opportunity is available locally.  For a complete list of disposal sites in North Carolina this year, please visit  http://www.ncagr.com/fooddrug/pds.htm

If you have questions about this program you may contact the Chatham County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at 919.542.8202 or Chatham County Waste Management at 919.542.5516.
