Zinnia Problem
July 2004
Diagnosis pending
This problem first appeared the first week of July after a rainy period.
The zinnias were cut and placed in water and 24 hours later the cut stems
had turned brown and discolored the water. The problem in the field was
asymptomatic when the plants were cut. Later, a couple of plants died
suddenly. The stems on the cut flowers turned brown, starting towards
the middle of the stem. The vascular tissue also turned brown and there
was some sliminess. The water or stems did not have the smell that one
would expect with a bacterial disease.
