The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension organized a drip irrigation “show and tell” at Perry-winkle Farm in northern Chatham County on March 29.

Cathy Jones and Mike Perry operate a diversified farm and raise a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers using sustainable production techniques. They also raise pastured poultry and pigs. You can find Perry-winkle Farm at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market and the Fearrington Farmers’ MarketVisit the Perry-winkle Farm profile on the Growing Small Farms website  for more information.

Cathy talked about how they set up their irrigation system from their well. John Soehner from nearby Eco Farm was also on hand to discuss irrigating from ponds, and in the spirit of show and tell, brought his sand filter and pump along to show everyone!

Spring crops at Perry-winkle Farm

Spring crops include garlic, fennel, snapdragons, and sweet William.

Pastured laying hens

The laying hens act as gleaners on harvested crops, foraging happily on cover crops and insects. The hens are closed inside the "eggmobile" at night to protect them from predators.

cover crops

Now is the time that fall-planted cover crops like this mixture of rye, hairy vetch, and crimson clover really put on biomass.
