THE BASICS OF BICYCLING
The Basics of Bicycling program is designed to give upper elementary school students, particularly fourth graders, a foundation of knowledge and skills in traffic-wise bicycling. This program requires seven class periods, the first two are for in-class lessons and the last five are on-bike lessons. Physical Education teachers enjoy teaching the “Basics of Bicycling” to their students with the help of volunteers.

Each year, over 300 young bicyclists die and many thousands more are seriously injured. The Basics of Bicycling program will give our students some of the tools and knowledge necessary to avoid becoming a statistic. Bicycling education teaches students skills that can reduce the number of bicycle-related injuries and deaths. Children who do not have basic bicycling skills and who do not understand and follow traffic rules are more likely to be injured while riding a bike.
192 fourth grade students at four schools participated in this program during the 2001-2002 school year. 13 volunteers (123 volunteer hours) helped make this program possible IMPACTS: Post evaluations
