DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM

Performance Goals

  • Performance goals for the youth should be based on the needs of that individual.
  • It is important for the goals to be realistic and attainable.
  • The goals should offer some challenge but not be "impossible" to achieve.
  • It is important for the youth to experience success and be recognized for that success.
  • For example, the goal "To improve grade in Math from D to B during the 3rd nine week period" would be too difficult. A more attainable goal would be "To improve Math grade from D to C during the 3rd nine week period".
  • We recommend only one goal per nine week period. For example, the goal, "To improve Math grade from D to C, improve Language Arts grade from C to B, and improve conduct grade from C to B during the 3rd nine week period" would be too difficult for one nine week period.
  • A better approach might be the goal "To improve Math grade from D to C during the 2nd nine weeks".
  • Then if the student is successful in reaching that goal, he/she could set a goal "To improve grade in Language Arts without other grades dropping during the 3rd nine weeks".
  • If a student has as his/her goal "To improve Science grade from C to B during the 2nd nine weeks" and does not succeed, the student may want to keep that same goal for the 3rd nine weeks.
  • Try to involve the teacher, principal, and student in jointly discussing and determining the goal for that specific six week period.

Sample performance Goals

To improve Language Arts grade from C to B.
To improve Math grade from D to C without other grades dropping.
To improve conduct grade from C to B.
To reduce school absences by 10%.
To reduce in-school suspension by 10%.
Not to be absent more than 3 days during 4th six weeks.
NOTE: These are samples only! Set performance goals based on the individual needs of the youth.
