4-H Embryology Program Description
Embryology is the scientific study of the formation, early growth, and development of living organisms. The 4-H Embryology Program consists of printed program materials, supplemental audio-visual materials, and volunteer training materials which combine to provide high quality experiential learning opportunities through which youth develop their knowledge and skills in not only the science of embryology, but also life in general. Drawing upon current research materials developed in the Poultry Science Department and State Office of 4-H and Youth Development, both at North Carolina State University, 4-H Embryology has for its objectives:
-
To increase knowledge and develop personal confidence and leadership abilities in youth through embryology activities;
-
To assist youth in developing necessary life skills through their interest in embryology;
-
To provide experiential learning experiences in the incubation, hatching, and brooding of chicks;
-
To encourage youth to demonstrate skills and knowledge mastered in embryology and to share these skills and knowledge with other youth as well as adults.
4-H Embryology provides opportunities which have meaningful effects on the lives of youth and offers many educational experiences to assist them in developing their personal skills, interests, and abilities.
For example, 4-H Embryology:
-
Helps youth grasp developmental processes and understand progressive stages in growth;
-
Teaches respect for life and the value of living things;
-
Teaches responsibility and caring for another creature;
-
Emphasizes a "hands-on" experience with living things;
-
Can help introduce and explain the topic of reproduction to youth;
- Introduces youth to the scientific process and other areas of science.
Example of 3rd Grade Science Competency-Based Curriculum Objectives for Embryology
-
1.3.1 Use repeated experiments to show that there is a reasonable expectation that similar results will be obtained if the experimental conditions are the same.
-
1.5.1 Through simple experiments involving the interpertation of data, show the probalistic nature of science.
-
2.2.1 Make observations based on five senses and based on the use of simple instruments.
-
2.3.1 Use numbers as a means of quantifying measurements and comparisons.
-
2.4.1 Describe observations and data through spoken and written words, graphs, drawings, diagrams, maps, and mathematic equations.
-
2.5.1 Make measurements such as length, volume, mass, and temperature.
-
2.7.1 Make predictions suggesting what will occur based on observations, measurements, and inferences.
-
2.11.1 Conduct experiments which test a hypothesis under controlled conditions.
-
2.12.1 Identify and control variables while performing an experiment.
-
3.1.1 When doing safe science activities, use safe practices.
-
3.2.1 In preparations for science activities, choose, construct, and/or assemble appropriate equipment.
-
3.3.1 Use appropriate techniques with science equipment and materials including computers, software and interfacing devices.
-
3.5.1 While conducting activities with living organisms, exhibit proper respect, care, and handling.
-
4.1.1 Respond positively to opportunities to participate in science exploration and discussion.
-
4.3.1 Show curiosity, persistence, and inventiveness while doing science.
-
5.4.1 Use thermometers and thermostats for measuring and controlling heat.
-
4.6 Read Celsius and Fahrenheit thermometers, relate the temperatures to everyday situations.
-
7.5 Demonstrates with a variety of concrete models, multiplication and division, including properties of multiplication.
-
7.6 Memorize multiplication facts/tables.
-
7.7 Model division with a one digit divisor as sharing equally and as repeated subtraction.
