The problem you have described is a canker. There are two fungi
that produce cankers in this plant. The control measures
are the same for both cankers, however, identification will help
determine which fungus is causing the problem, and predict the
long term consequences to the tree.
Does the canker
If you are unable to tell, you may wish to take the general steps
of pruning out the dead branches. Sterilize your pruning
equipment to prevent spread of the disease. Use 1 part bleach to
9 parts water to sterilize equipment. Remove severely diseased
plants.
