NCEAFCS State Awards

PROCEDURE FOR SUBMITTING AWARDS

ELIGIBILITY
1. To qualify for awards or fellowships, dues must be paid to the national treasurer by February 1.

2. Awards recipients must be active and/or life members as of February 1 of the year they are to receive the awards. Only exception is for non-members on team award applications.

3. The team leader for a team award application must be a NEAFCS member.

4. Cooperative Extension team members who are not members of NEAFCS are not eligible for monetary awards and will receive a framed certificate (not a plaque). Plaques can be purchased for non-team members for the cost of the plaque.

5. Individuals and/or teams may receive only one national award or fellowship in the same year, but may submit applications in more than one category. A member may receive an individual and team award in the same year. This does not include the Distinguished Award, Continued Excellence Award, or NEAFCS Extension Educator of the Year.

6. A member, as an individual or team member, may not receive the same award in two consecutive years.

7. NEAFCS members are not permitted to pay dues for past years in order to extend the years of membership.

8. Members of the NEAFCS Board are not eligible to receive any awards (other than Distinguished and/or Continued Excellence), nor should their names be mentioned for team awards.

9. Award winners must receive 85 points or more to be a national winner, and 80 points or more for regional recognition. In awards having more than one national winner, on the regional level, applications receiving at least 80 points will be recognized as regional finalists. For the Communications Awards with first, second and third place national winners, there will be first,second and third place regional winners.

10. All awards and fellowships will be presented at the NEAFCS Annual Session.

PROCEDURE AND FORMAT

1. Five (5) copies of the General Award Application Form are required by the State Judging committee. (Note: National competition requires 4 copies. State winning applications will be forwarded by the State Vice-President for Awards and Recognition). Follow the procedures listed for each award or fellowship. If, procedures are not followed, and if application is incomplete, i.e.application form lacks information and /or signatures, required support letters are lacking, 50 word summary is lacking etc. the application will be disqualified.

2. Five(5) copies of newsletters, news articles, publications, videos, radio cassette tapes and curriculum packages are needed for judging. For overheads, one (1) set of the transparencies and four (4) printed copies of the transparencies on regular paper must be submitted. For computer generated programs, one (1) disk or CD-Rom and four(4) paper printed copies of program must be submitted.

3. When submitting the NC Early Career and Youth STATE Award applications, complete ONLY the special application form for each award found at the following web sites

   Five (5) copies of the application must be submitted. Follow the guidelines printed here for submitting.

4. The national guidelines state that a letter of support is needed from appropriate state staff or district administrator for certain national awards. This letter of support will be secured by the state vice-president for awards and recognition after the state judging committee selects the winning applications.

5. For all awards, except Distinguished , Continued Excellence and NEAFCS Extension Educator of the Year, affiliates with 1-75 members are eligible to submit one application in each award category and affiliates with membership of 76 plus are eligible to submit two applications in each category.

6. For team award applications, only the team leader completes a general application form. Team members are listed on the application form and membership or non-membership is designated.

7. No titles or professional designations will be used on award certificates, only names.

8. For team award applications, all correspondence is addressed to the team leader only. It is the responsibility of the team leader to communicate with team members.

9. The award application form must be typed or printed by computer.

10. The awards summary must be included on the general application and limited to 50 words. Anything over 50 words will be edited.

11. Supplementary materials accompanying the application should be typed with all pages numbered.

12. Listing of accomplishments is limited to time span of applicant's nominated project or program.

13. Applicants should keep a file copy of the total application as submitted.

14. Only the following award applications will be returned: curriculum packages and overhead transparencies.

15. Package the following award applications in a plastic sleeve cover - Greenwood Fellowship, Grace Frysinger Fellowship, Distinguished , Continued Excellence, Florence Hall, New Professional, Food Safety Award, Early Childhood Care Training, Para-Professional, Dean Don Felker Financial Management, Mary W. Wells Memorial Diversity, Kraft Foods Consumer Center Media Grant, Program Excellence through Research, Environmental Education, Community Partnership, Newsletters, Written News, and Educational Publications. For the following, Radio, Television, Educational Technology and Marketing Package place the tape (audio or visual) or the computer disk in the plastic sleeve cover with the written materials. Label tapes and computer disks with the applicant's name and the award category. For Overhead Transparencies and Educational Curriculum Package package as appropriate for the materials, i.e. notebooks for curriculum. Place Extension Educator of the Year applications in notebooks.

16. Mail 5 copies of your application (certified mail or UPS) to the DISTRICT Awards and Recognition Vice-President by February 20th. District VP's will forward awards applications to the appropriate State Awards Group Chairs by date announced by the State VP for Awards and Recognition.

RECOGNITION GUIDELINES

1. State winners will be notified after judging is complete on the state level. The names of winners will not be released to the general membership or to the public until after the state meeting awards presentation.

2. First place state winners will be recognized at the state meeting with a plaque. First and second place winning applications will be sent on to national competition (for national award categories). Exceptions: Distinguished Award winners and Continued Excellence --the number of winners will be determined according to national guidelines, which is determined by the number of paid members of NEAFCS by the February 1 deadline. Ada Dalla Pozza Professional Development Endowment will be presented at the annual Extension Conference.

3. For the Youth Award, and the Early Career Award, which are state awards only, one winner shall be selected from each association district.

4. All Cooperative Extension team members who are members of NEAFCS will receive a plaque if they are state winners. Cooperative Extension team members who are NOT members of NEAFCS will receive a framed certificate. Non-Extension team members will not receive a plaque or a certificate (motion passed at state meeting, 1999)

   If NEAFCS members wish to purchase a plaque or certificate for non-members contact the in advance the state Awards Chair. These may be purchased for the cost of the plaque or certificate and must be paid in advance. (updated 2000 state meeting)

5. Quality plaques will be given to award winners according to specifications developed by the awards committee in 1999 in order to ensure continuity of quality from year to year. The following awards shall receive 9 x 12 plaques:
   
   Distinguished
   Florence Hall
   Continued Excellence
   Ada Dalla-Pozza Professional Development Endowment

6. The following will receive a framed certificate, since they are proposals for funding or fellowships:
   Greenwood Fellowship
   Grace Frysinger Fellowship
   Kraft Foods Consumer Center Media Grant
   (motion passed at state meeting 1998)

7. All other awards will receive 8 x 10 plaques. (motion passed at state meeting 1999)

8. NEAFCS members who are winners of the following national awards shall receive a corsage to wear at the national meeting:
   
   Distinguished Award
   Florence Hall Award
   Continued Excellence Award
   NEAFCS Extension Educator of the Year

   The state vice-president of awards and recognition will contact the State President to order corsages, and will notify the district presidents to reimburse the state treasurer for national corsage expenses.

Applications received after the deadline, incomplete applications and applications that do not include at least 5 copies will not be judged.

ADA B. DALLA-POZZA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ENDOWMENT

Upon the realization that there was no opportunity for professional development awards specifically designated for Extension Family and Consumer Education Agents in North Carolina, Ada Dalla-Pozza, retired State Home Economics Leader, initiated the establishment of this endowment fund in 1992. Members of the North Carolina Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences assisted in providing the initial endowment of $30,000 before utilizing the interest gained for their first award.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Can be made to the NC Family and Consumer Sciences Foundation designating the contribution to be added to the "NCEAFCS Ada Dalla-Pozza Professional Development Award". Indicate if the contribution is being given in honor or in memory of someone and the name and address where appreciation should be sent.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this award is to enhance the professional development of an outstanding Extension Family and Consumer Sciences career professional in North Carolina, who exhibits the ability to recognize concerns and needs of families and to involve people in planning and implementing educational programs that benefit clientele. The award is to be used for a professional improvement opportunity that will enhance the development of the applicant.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

1. Member in good standing of North Carolina Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

2. Applicant must have a professional Extension appointment on a county/area level with the responsibility for planning and implementing programs that benefits families.

3. Applicant must have had a minimum of 5 years outstanding and creditable experience as an Extension professional with North Carolina Cooperative Extension and anticipate continuing career with NCCE, with at least 5 years of left before retirement.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

1. Original application is to be mailed to Vicki Pettit, Exective Assistant to the Director of Cooperative Extension.

2. Due date will be announce when details for the Cooperative Extension's Award Opportunities for Agents are released.

3. A copy of the application is to be sent to the current NCEAFCS state Vice-President for Awards and Recognition.

JUDGING PROCEDURES

1. The State Vice President for Awards and Recognition will received all submitted ADA B. DALLA-POZZA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ENDOWMENT award applications from Dr. Joe Zublena's office.

2. Award applications will be give to State Awards Committee Group A to score and select an awardee. Mrs. Ada Dalla-Pozza will serve each year as an ex-officio member of this Judging Committee.

3. Awardee will be notified by letter from the State Vice President for Awards and Recognition.

4. The State Vice President for Awards and Recognition will coordinate the presentation of this award with the State Extension Honors Awards committee and NC State University Agricultural Foundation.

AWARDS PRESENTATION

1. Funds to be awarded will be subject to interest available up to the amount of $1000 per awardee. Available interest funds over the amount awarded will be added to the principle.

2. If there are no qualified applicants for this award in a given year, all interest funds for that year will be added to the principle in the development fund account.

3. A plaque and check will be presented to the awardee at the annual conference (or District Conference when an annual conference is not held) of North Carolina Cooperative Extension during the organization's awards ceremony.

EARLY CAREER AWARD

This award is established to recognize outstanding accomplishments of Family and Consumer Sciences member with less than ten years experience as an Extension Agent with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension ; to recognize and encourage the use of innovative and effective methods of conducting Extension programs; and to encourage Family and Consumer Education Agents to participate in NCEAFCS and attend annual sessions. One Family and Consumer Education Agent per ASSOCIATION district can receive this award each year.

GUIDELINES FOR RECOGNITION

1. Be a member of NCEAFCS
2. Family and Consumer Educators in each ASSOCIATION district who have less than 10 years experience are encouraged to apply for this award.
3. Applications should be submitted following the Procedure For Submitting Awards.
4. Application is due February 20th to District Vice-President for Awards and Recognition.

1. Accomplishment of nominee should be considered according to the number of years worked.

YOUTH AWARD

BACKGROUND

The Youth Award is granted to recognize and celebrate the efforts of Family and Consumer Education Agents for their accomplishments in youth programming. One Family and Consumer Education Agent per ASSOCIATION district can receive this award each year.

GUIDELINES FOR RECOGNITION

1. Be a member of NCEAFCS
2. Programs must have been conducted within the last year
3. Applications should be submitted following the Procedure For Submitting Awards.
4. Application is due February 20th to District Vice-President for Awards and Recognition.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Should be based on the following:
1. Accomplishment of nominee should be considered according to the number of years worked.
2. Nominee should be a current member of the NCEAFCS.
3. Nomination can be made by another staff member.
4. Nominee should include supportive materials (one or two items -- news articles, brochures, etc.)

RUTH CURRENT AWARD

The Ruth Current Scholarship Fund was established by the North Carolina Extension Homemakers Association, Inc. This memorial fund which provides a $2,000 scholarship is deposited with the Home Economics Foundation, Inc. of the School of Human Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to assist graduate students to obtain advanced degrees in Environmental Sciences. Preference is given to applicants who are serving as an Extension Family and Consumer Education agent.

Applicants must be pursuing their major in Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (not a minor), and are obligated to work with the NC Cooperative Extension for two years following completion of the degree.

For an application, interested individuals should write to the Dean of Human Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 235 Stone Building, Greensboro, NC 27412 or call 336-334-5980. Applications are to be sent to the Dean of the School of Human Environmental Sciences, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro by February 15. Awards are made for the following semester.
