Through collaboration with county and community agencies, Durham County's FCS team has focused its Parent Education Program on Strengthening Families at Risk. Fifty-five hours of life skills programming were presented quarterly reaching over 1300 participants. The classes helped families increase their life skills and move towards self sufficiency.

Early Childhood Care Training Award

As a result, educators are able to use the calendar to plan ahead for their credit needs, as well as, implement high quality training techniques effectively in the classroom.

Smart Kids, Fight BAC!TM is a food safety class designed to educate child care professionals in an effort to provide healthy and safe environments for children for whom food-borne illnesses can be fatal. The importance of handwashing, sanitizing, food preparation and storage were the focal point of this presentation.
Child care professionals prepare millions of meals each day that are consumed by children in their care. Food-borne illness can be prevented through educational efforts such as this program.

Participants are given handouts with nutritious recipes, and information on food safety, weight gain and healthy foods choices during the program. Overheads provide a visual outline of the program which is entitled "Nutrition During Pregnacy and Following Birth."

Together with Office Assistant, Dyanne Gordon Green, they compiled recipes and designed a colorful brochure to go along with their presentation, Festive Holiday Beverages.

Lucille M. Carter has been an advocate for youth and 4-H throughout her Extension career. In 2002, she organized the Curious Cooks 4-H Club which meets monthly with lessons on nutrition, cooking terms, equipment, and safe food handling. She also reached youth with "Color Me Healthy" and "Fight Bac".

Sharon Kinion brought the Be Active Kids curriculum to Washington County's child care providers. She educated approximately 35 childcare providers using the interactive Be Active Kids curriculum, which impacted approximately 200 children. These childcare providers can help their preschoolers learn desirable dietary and eating habits early in life.

Margaret provided more than 700 youth hands-on educational information about food safety, helping them see that learning really can be fun. Activities during the past year included a Preschool Nutrition Camp, the 21st Century After School Program in the Halifax County school system, and the summer reading program at the county library.
