DRAFT
MINUTES The Board of Directors and Officers of the North Carolina Association of Cooperative Extension Specialists met from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, in the Butler Communication Services Building on N.C. State University's campus. Present were Ted Feitshans, Karen DeBord, John O'Sullivan, Dee Shore, Rhonda Sherman, Mike Yoder, Chuck Moore, Rhonda Conlon. Board members not present were Claudette Smith and Harriett Edwards. Officer and board elections The board discussed potential candidates for 3 board member positions as well as the officer positions of president-elect and secretary-treasurer. Chuck Moore agreed to have his name placed on the ballot for 2004 secretary-treasurer. Ted Feitshans, Mike Yoder and Karen DeBord agreed to follow up with suggested individuals to find out if they would be interested in serving and willing to have their names on the ballot. The ballot -- including two nominees for president-elect, one for secretary-treasurer and three or four for board -- will be presented to the membership in October for voting. Treasury Dee Shore presented the following treasury update: Total
assets, January 9, 2003: $3,061.03 2003 Revenue
January 9-June 9: $332.63 total 2003 Expenses
through January 9-June 9: $545.95 total Education awards John O'Sullivan outlined several concerns and questions raised by judges for the 2003 Extension Education Awards. John will ask Ellen Smoak and Robert Williamson to review and suggest changes in the award guidelines so that they provide better guidance to program submitters and reviewers. John will ask that they submit recommendations for review during the board's October meeting. The board agreed to create three categories of awards with differing monetary prizes -- Outstanding Specialist ($100), Outstanding Individual Program ($100) and Outstanding Team Program ($150) -- and to limit eligibility to members nominated by other members. No self-nominations, unless endorsed by another member, will be allowed. Also, both the nominee and the nominator must be current on their dues at the time when the nomination is submitted. Finally, the board agreed that checks should be written to individuals rather than their programs. Rhonda Conlon volunteered to have the award plaque engraved with 2003 winners. October program John O'Sullivan reported that a representative of Handmade in America will be the guest speaker for the October meeting, and he will invite Drs. Jon Ort, Joe Zublena, Ray McKinnie and Steve Jones to provide administrative updates. Ted Feitshans will extend an invitation to Industrial Extension Service specialists.
