State ESP Friend of Extension Award
Professional Achievements:
Developoment of wheat, oat, and tritricale varieties that combine overall
agronomic superiority with disease, insect resistance, and end-use quality.
The development of wheat cultivars that will not require routine applications
of foliar fungicides to control diseases and developing insect resistant cultivars
that will eliminate the need for routine insecticidal applications to control
pests. The oat development program emphasize grain yield, test weight, and
grain color for the increasing horse market in N.C. In addition, the research
program strives for quantification of genetic variability in cultivated crops
and their wild and weedy relatives and to find molecualar markerslinked to
biotic resistance.
Dr. Murphy teaches a graduate course in Plant Breeding Methods; chair 5 PhD
committess, co-chair 3 PhD committees,; chair 5 MS committees; and member
of 17 PhD and 9 MS graduate committees. Served on numberous state and national
committees, councils, and associations related to the small grain industry.
Significance:
Dr. Paul Murphy's teaching and research programs in plant breeding and genetics
are of the highest level, however it is outreach beyond the N.C. State University
campus to North Carolina's small grain seedsmen, farmers, millers, and county
Extension personnel that make him worthy of recognization as a State Friend
of Extension. Dr. Murphy is readily available to and supportative of county
