Dr. J. Paul Murphy
State ESP Friend of Extension Award

Professional Achievements:
Developoment of wheat, oat, and tritricale varieties that combine overall agronomic superiority with disease, insect resistance, and end-use quality. The development of wheat cultivars that will not require routine applications of foliar fungicides to control diseases and developing insect resistant cultivars that will eliminate the need for routine insecticidal applications to control pests. The oat development program emphasize grain yield, test weight, and grain color for the increasing horse market in N.C. In addition, the research program strives for quantification of genetic variability in cultivated crops and their wild and weedy relatives and to find molecualar markerslinked to biotic resistance.
Dr. Murphy teaches a graduate course in Plant Breeding Methods; chair 5 PhD committess, co-chair 3 PhD committees,; chair 5 MS committees; and member of 17 PhD and 9 MS graduate committees. Served on numberous state and national committees, councils, and associations related to the small grain industry.

 

Significance:
Dr. Paul Murphy's teaching and research programs in plant breeding and genetics are of the highest level, however it is outreach beyond the N.C. State University campus to North Carolina's small grain seedsmen, farmers, millers, and county Extension personnel that make him worthy of recognization as a State Friend of Extension. Dr. Murphy is readily available to and supportative of county Extension small grain programs by participating in field days, supplying seed, or help in offering resources in conducting county extension programs. He is a regulator visitor to the state's leaders in milling and small grain seed production to listen for problems and opportunities to be of assistance.
