Karen Whitley's career as Administrative Secretary for the Edgecombe County Extension Center could serve as the template for others in similar positions to emulate. She set an example of professionalism, diligence and sacrifice that elevated all those associated with her be they client or coworker. Karen's most applauded talent is that of public relations. For 30 years she has been the celebrated and recognized meeter and greeter of those visiting or calling her Extension Center. Her reception always makes the client feel special and important. Karen's cheerful demeanor, while accompanying her ability to get people what they want when they want it, has set a standard of excellence that is almost legendary in Edgecombe County. Her professionalism is also mirrored in her untiring work in the Extension Secretaries Association and the 14 offices she has held. Karen's talent and ability was recognized by Extension's Administration as she was asked to serve on numerous state-wide committees such as the Marketing and Diversity Task Force. An intimate knowledge of budget and finance as well as other responsibilities like word processing, publication production and office management has made her indispensable. This was especially true after Hurricane Floyd destroyed our Extension offices. Her knowledge, skill, and commitment helped Extension to set up in temporary office space, produce newsletters when we had no equipment, replace over $250,000 work of office equipment, furniture and supplies, and design and furnish over a million dollars in renovations. Karen's 30 year career is truly exemplary and is characterized by service and devotion to the "mission" of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and the people of Edgecombe County.
Her abilities and accomplishments have
not gone unnoticed as she represented Extension as a member of the NCSU Staff
Senate for three terms, twice received the District's Award of Excellence
in Special Leadership, the Distinguished Performance Award for the College
ofAgriculture and Life Sciences, the Tarboro-Edgecombe Area Chamber of Commerce
Secretary of the Year Award and the State Award of Excellence in Special Leadership
to name just a few.
