About Our Family and Consumer Sciences Programs
Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) offers a wide range of topics designed to provide individuals, families, and communities with dynamic, issue driven education across the spectrum of family needs. These include nutrition, food safety, parenting, human development, aging, housing, volunteer development, health and family resource management.
Family Resource Management
Family resource management, a part of Family and Consumer Education Programs within the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, is based on the philosophy that the quality of life of individuals and families is largely dependent on their knowledge and skill in obtaining, using and conserving financial and other resources. People of all ages need education in personal finance and in their consumer and legal rights and responsibilities.

Family Development
The basic unit of society is the family. Rapid changes in society create multiple family challenges and increase stress. Like the rest of the nation, Catawba County faces challenges such as , poverty, homelessness, unemployment, changes in family structure, retirement, care for children and older adults, and violence. Through community educational programs offered by Cooperative Extension, families and individuals can learn to increase their options, broaden their understanding, develop their coping skills, and determine how to contribute to their communities.
