Module 11:

Pills, Potions and Powders (Herbals)


Overview:

This module focuses on herbal products and other dietary supplements and what you need to know as an older adult.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will show knowledge change by demonstrating one of the following as a result of participating in this module:

Session 1: Will be able to explain why drugs are more potent and predictable than herbal products. Will be able to explain why herbal products are not necessarily safer than drugs.
Session 2:

Will be able to use ‘Using Herbs Safely' to find potentially undesirable interactions

Will be able to explain why they need to make sure that their doctor or pharmacist knows what herbs they are taking.

Session 3:

Will be able to recognize a dietary supplement.

Will be able to explain why it is important to be a smart shopper.

When purchasing herbal and other dietary supplement products.

Session 4:

Will be able to provide some reasons why needs for certain nutrients increase with age.

Will use knowledge gained to develop a personal plan (ways) to choose appropriate food and/or supplements sources for nutrients of particular concern for older adults.


Participants will show behavior change by demonstrating one of the following as a result of participating in this module:Module 11
  • How they have assumed responsibility for their taking supplements wisely, if they take any.
  • How they have followed their personal plan to lower their nutritional risk.
