Extension Master Gardener Volunteers are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people. What really sets Extension Master Gardener Volunteers apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture and willingness to educate others. In exchange for their training, persons who become Extension Master Gardener Volunteers contribute time as volunteers, working through their Cooperative Extension Center to provide horticultural-related information to the public.

Is the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program for you? To help you decide if you should apply to be an Extension Master Gardener Volunteer, ask yourself these questions:

• Do I want to learn more about the culture and maintenance of many types of plants?
• Am I eager to participate in a practical and intense training program?
• Do I look forward to sharing my knowledge with people in my community?
• Do I have enough time to attend training and to complete the volunteer service?

If you answered yes to these questions, the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program could be for you.

Rockingham County Center Pollinators of Blueberries Program! Tue Apr 22, 2014 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Where:
Starts at Rockingham County Agricultural Center then out to farm
— 4 days away

Many different insects, in addition to honey bees, are important for flower pollination. Good pollination increases yields of fruit and vegetables in gardens and on farms.

This Pollinators of Blueberries Program will start and end at the Rockingham County Agricultural Center – but we will visit a blueberry farm to collect pollinators during the program. Please arrive on time since daylight will be limiting and dress appropriately for outside farm trip.

Dr. Hannah Burrack, NCSU Entomology Extension Specialist for Small Fruit and Specialty Crops will be conducting the program.

"A large, healthy blueberry plant produces thousands of flower buds every year. With up to 16 individual flowers developing from each bud every flower a potential berry, pollination needs in blueberries are great. Blueberry pollen is sticky and relatively heavy. It cannot move on its own and it is not easily blown around by the wind like pine pollen or corn pollen. Furthermore, the shape and position of blueberry flower parts effectively prevent the pollen from falling onto a receptive stigma — even in cultivars that are self-fertile. Therefore, in order to set fruit, the flowers of a blueberry plant must be pollinated by insects."

If you haven't heard, we are bringing one of the most dynamic training programs for personal and professional effectiveness ever developed to our area (yes, the RTP, Chapel Hill and Durham folks are green with envy but are welcome to make the drive)!

Originally designed for Fortune 500 companies, the course truly challenges people to become more proactive, to learn to continuously begin with the end in mind, put and keep first things first, balance courage with consideration, go for win/win, become synergistic and more.

We take each area in bite size weekly chunks and deliver it on Fridays during lunch from January to May (some folks take a lunch plus one hour of annual leave; others have their company approve the time for professional development).

North Carolina Cooperative Extension Family & Consumer Sciences Agent & Licensed Franklin Covey Facilitator Rachel Monteverdi will teach the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Leadership course on Fridays from 12- 2 pm.

The registration is at the link below. Please share widely with others. The class begins on Friday, JANUARY 30th at noon, and remember: Bring your lunch, arrive on time and prepare to be challenged! Call our office to sign up now – 919-496-3344 - 103 South Bickett Blvd. in Louisburg, NC.

209 N. Graham Hopedale Road, Burlington, NC, United States
— 1 week away

Rain Garden Workshop

Alamance County Cooperative Extension and the City of Burlington Stormwater Division are offering a Rain Garden workshop on April 26, 2014. The class will begin at 10 am at the Alamance County Cooperative Extension Center and conclude around 12:30 pm at the Fairchild Soccer Park. Registration is free so please call (336) 570-6740 to reserve a spot or register online at go.ncsu.edu/raingardenworkshop.

The workshop will begin with presentations given by Geoff Leister-Master Gardener, Chester Patterson-Environmental Specialist, and Bonnie Hutchinson-Horticulturalist set to start at 10:00AM at the Alamance County Center, 209-C N Graham-Hopedale Road, Burlington, NC. Attendees will then be directed to the soccer park to participate in the hands on planting portion of the workshop, which will conclude around 12:30 PM.

Rain Gardens are areas that use plants and soils to remove pollutants from rain water runoff by way of adsorption and filtration. In addition, these areas provide attractive landscaping as well as habitat enhancement benefits for pollinators.

Plants are an integral element of the pollutant removal and water filtration process. Plant roots aid in the physical and chemical bonding of soil particles necessary to form stable aggregates, improve soil structure, and increase infiltration capacity.

The workshop is intended to inform and educate residents of Alamance County of the basic design, functionality, and regulatory requirements of stormwater management facilities. As homeowners and property managers become more aware of the issues of stormwater management, many of them may choose to incorporate something similar at their homes and businesses to manage rain water runoff.

For more details please contact Chester Patterson, City of Burlington-Environmental Specialist, at 336-222-5140 or cpatterson@ci.burlington.nc.us.

Cost per family: $105.00 per family
