North Carolina Cooperative Extension - Robeson, Bladen, Hoke, Scotland, and Cumberland County Centers - will offer a reproduction series this fall. The series will consist of three night classes and one hands-on demonstration. The classes will be held on Thursday, November 6, 13, and 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Robeson County Center, 455 Caton Road, Lumberton. The hands-on demonstration will be on Saturday, December 6, from 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Sampson County Livestock Arena, 1020 Taylors Bridge Highway, Clinton, to see practices discussed in class.

Classes will cover the following topics: basics of female and male reproduction; calving season and process; vaccination and health management; heifer development and management; bull development and management; natural mating, artificial insemination, and heat detection; reproductive goals and benchmarks; advanced technology (estrus synchronization, timed artificial insemination, embryo transfer, etc.); understanding expected progeny differences (EPDs); pregnancy checking; and budgets, economics, and recordkeeping.

The cost of the series is $25 and includes a manual for you to take home. The cost for each additional person from the same farm is $10, but the farm gets only one manual. Fees will be collected at the first meeting and can be paid by check, money order, or cash. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Bladen County Cooperative Extension. The series is limited to 30 participants, so please register by October 30.

WNC AgOptions awards farmers who are diversifying or expanding their operations $3,000 and $6,000 grants to offset the risk of trying a new venture. The NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission recently funded WNC Agriculture Options through 2016, guaranteeing that WNC Farmers will receive a total of $340,000 in small grants for the next two years.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend an information session 5:30pm to 7:00pm on October 16 at the Mountain Horticulture Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River. Program leaders will offer an overview of the program, review requirements for applying, and give tips for writing applications. Reminder that the Soil Testing peak-season fee will begin on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 and extend through Tuesday, March 31, 2015. During this time period, soil samples are charged a $4/sample peak-season fee. To avoid the peak-season fee, please have all soil samples to the Chowan County Extension office by 5pm Friday, November 21. We can not guarantee delivery after this date. Samples can be left by the back door (Virginia Rd entrance) after hours. Thanks!

Forsyth County Center Soil Testing Fees to Begin Soon Fri Nov 21, 2014 — 50 minutes away

From December through March, a peak-season fee of $4 per box is charged for the processing of all soil samples. Most of the year, April through November, routine NCDA&CS soil tests are provided at "no direct cost" to N.C. residents because of funding derived from a statewide fee on commercial fertilizer. Please bring your sample(s) to our office by 5pm on November 21 to avoid the $4 charge.

"Incubator Farm ONLINE Training Program "
This ongoing Farm Incubator Online Initial Training is for beginners interested in vegetable farming as a career choice. Students will build a foundation of knowledge that will allow them to pursue vegetable farming. This course is a prerequisite to participating in the Elma C. Lomax farm incubator program. Includes information on insurance, taxes, selecting farmland, marketing, and post harvest handling. Classes are online and pursued at the students leisure. This section will cover how to dress for success for 4-H'ers and volunteers. You will learn how important first impressions are for a competition and volunteers working in the community.

D. Refurbished Decorative Jars
Seeing is believing, and what you will learn in this class will definitely make you a believer. It will make you a believer in your ability to make beautiful and useful items out of glass jars. Not only are these craft projects great for items you'll want to use yourself, but many would also make great gifts.

E. Leadership Basics (Master ACE Gold Level)
Workshop participants will learn about: Defining Leadership, Understanding Personal Leadership Challenges, Assessing Characteristics of good leaders and Communication and Teambuilding in Leadership Roles.

This workshop will introduce participants to activities in the PreK-8 Activity Guide, The Focus on Forests Secondary Module, and the NEW Southeastern Forests and Climate Change Secondary module.

Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an interdisciplinary environmental education program designed for educators of ANY background. The hands-on activities facilitate the exploration of topics including communication, economics, energy and fuels, geology, government, history, recycling, transportation, watersheds, wildlife, and much more! Participants will learn about the materials through direct engagement in the PLT activities throughout the workshop.

Differentiated instruction? Technology connections? Literature links? STEM? The PLT activity guide covers it all!!! The PreK-8 guide is correlated to the Common Core (math and ELA) as well as to the NC Essential Standards (science and social studies). CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I in the EE Certification Program. Registered Foresters can earn 3.0 CFEs in Criteria I and 3.0 CFEs in Criteria II by participating in this workshop.

There is no charge for the workshop or materials, however, pre-registration is required. Please make a personal commitment to attend to ensure there are enough materials and space for everyone. If you must cancel, please do so in a timely manner so someone else may take your place in the workshop.

Join 4-H for a fun filled day on November 26 for a holiday workshop. We will be making some holiday crafts, baking and just having fun. Each year we make new centerpieces for Thanksgiving, as well as, all kinds of Christmas related crafts. The workshop will begin at 8:30AM and end at 4:30PM at the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Office in Murphy. Lunch and snacks are included in the workshop cost. This two-part Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) workshop series will address how farmers of all sizes can achieve USDA GAPs certification, deliver information on principles of fresh produce safety and on-farm hazard assessment, as well as provide assistance with creating a fresh produce farm safety plan. Lunch is included with both workshops.

Part 1
Navigating the USDA GAP Audit

The first workshop, Navigating the USDA GAP Audit, will be based on newly developed components focused on navigating a GAPs audit. This workshop will combine classroom and on-farm instruction to provide producers with the tools needed to identify potential food safety concerns as well as strategies to minimize contamination. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance that fulfills a portion of the eligibility requirements to receive up to $600 in GAPs Cost Share assistance from CFSA.

Portions of the first workshop will take place outside, rain or shine. We will carpool from the Extension office. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a water bottle and appropriate weather gear.

Fresh Produce Safety Program and Plan Development

The second workshop, Fresh Produce Safety Program and Plan Development, conducted in a computer lab, will provide direct assistance to producers in completing a fresh produce safety plan. Attendees will leave this session with a well-developed working draft of their specific food safety plan, which becomes the framework for an audit, and can be used to demonstrate individual farm risk-reduction steps. Completion of the first workshop is a prerequisite and basic computer knowledge is required in order to receive the maximum benefit from this session.

You will have a chance to see these cultivars yourself and vote for your favorites. Approximately one hundred different cultivars of poinsettias—including numerous new experimental cultivars—will be on display. Stop by to see the famous 9' tall poinsettia tree. North Carolina Cooperative Extension and N.C. Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning (REAL) present Small Farm Profitability Series with Tony Kleese, 6 - 9 p.m., at the Cooperative Extension Center.

This is a series of six classes, broken into two blocks, taught by Tony Kleese. Tony is an agriculture entrepreneurship expert with a focus on sustainable agriculture. The seminars address common challenges faced by new and transitioning farmers in the region. The course covers growing crops for the organic and sustainable markets, and it is designed to help participants by connecting them to new skills, community support, and development of a solid market-based growing plan. This workshop is intended for beginner high-tunnel growers or growers interested in purchasing their first high tunnel. The workshop will cover the basics of high-tunnel production including: fertility, irrigation, pest and disease management, site selection, tunnel orientation, and crop selection. Guest speaker at the workshop will be Dr. Sanjun Gu, Horticultural Specialist with the North Carolina A&T Cooperative Extension Program.

A representative from the Natural Resources Conservation Service will be on hand to discuss a cost-share program to assist in the purchase of high-tunnel greenhouses.
