Dig It! The Secrets of Soil

May 16–August 16, 2015

The Museum of Natural Sciences
11 W. Jones St., Raleigh, NC 27601

There are more living creatures in a shovelful of rich soil than there are people on the planet. Yet, more is known about the far side of the moon than about soil. Dig It! reveals the complex world of soil and how this underfoot ecosystem supports nearly every form of life on Earth. Developed in conjunction with the Soil Science Society of America and Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, this exhibition includes interactive displays, hands-on models and 54 soil monoliths representing each U.S. state, territory and Washington, D.C. Exclusive bonus elements highlight North Carolina agriculture, pottery and research projects from our Museum.

Exhibition Hours
Monday-Saturday: 10am-5pm (last entry at 4pm)
Sunday: noon-5pm (last entry at 4pm)
First Fridays: 10am-8pm (last entry at 7pm)

Generous support from BASF, the Soil Science Society of America, and other NC donors enables free entry to this exhibition.

In this workshop we will learn how to figure out what is killing the tomato plants and what, if anything, can be done to stop it or prevent it from happening. Participants are invited to bring a dying plant, or fruit to work through the diagnostic process on as we go through the workshop.

Avery County Center DEADLINE: NC Landscape Contractors' License Sat Aug 1, 2015 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM — 3 days away

New Requirements For The North Carolina Landscape Contractors’ License:

On August 1, 2014 the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation that mandates any landscape professional who wants to perform landscaping work where the price of all contracts for labor, material, and other items for a given job site, dying any consecutive 12 month period, is greater than $30,000 must have a landscape contractors license. The law was passed for several reasons. The first reason being to protect the consumer. The Landscape Contractors Licensing Board will help consumers who have legitimate complaints. The license will also eliminate the need for a landscape contractor to hold a general contractors license when performing jobs over $30,000. Being a Licensed Landscape Contractor will also identify you as a professional to consumers and municipalities

There is a grandfathering provision that allows you to obtain the license without taking the certification test, but this must be done by August 1, 2015. You are eligible if:

Registered Landscape Contractor
Licensed Irrigation contractor
Certified Turf Professional

Have 3 years of documented landscape contracting experience, eduction can be substituted for years experience at a rate of 1 year for a 2 year degree, 2 years for a 4 year degree, 2 years for education or business experience.

Water Bath Canning: Tomatoes, Salsa and Such

Water Bath Canning: Tomatoes, Salsa and Such is a 4-hour hands-on workshop that addresses water bath canning with a specific emphasis on the proper way to home can tomatoes, salsa, tomato juice, and other tomato products in a water bath canner.

The workshop will begin with a basic discussion of home canning and the safety considerations involved with this method of food preservation. We will talk about the kinds of equipment needed for water bath canning* and how to operate a water bath canner properly. Participants will have the chance to practice hands-on techniques when they get into the Extension demo-kitchen to can tomatoes and prepare salsa. Participants will receive guidelines for acidifying all varieties of tomatoes safely and will go home with lots of canning recipes for tasty tomato treats!

Dates:
Two sessions of Water Bath Canning: Tomatoes, Salsa and Such will be offered. Each session is the same so you need only sign up for one date:

Friday, June 12, 2015
Friday, July 17, 2015

Times: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

All sessions will be held at the NC Cooperative Extension – Union County Agricultural Center, 3230 Presson Road, Monroe, NC 28112

Cost of Water Bath Canning: Tomatoes, Salsa and Such: $20.00 each

• Please note: Tomatoes may be canned in a pressure canner, too, but this workshop does not address pressure canning. For more information about how to use a pressure canner, please see the description for the Basics of Home Canning workshop. Those who prefer using a pressure canner for canning tomatoes might still like to take this workshop, however, as it provides an update on current guidelines for preparing, acidifying, packing and processing tomatoes to keep products safe. Those guidelines would be the same whether you used a water bath or a pressure canner.

Introduction to Food Preservation: Freezing and Dehydrating

The Introduction to Food Preservation: Freezing and Dehydrating is a 4-hour program designed to teach the principles of safe freezing and food dehydrating.

The class will begin with an overview of the principles of freezing and dehydrating. Participants will learn about the safety aspects involved with each process and the key considerations when selecting equipment. The instructor will also have freezing and dehydrating equipment on display. Following the presentation, participants will move into the kitchen for some hands-on experiences, including freezing and dehydrating of a number of different fruits and vegetables.

If you know little about the principles behind freezing and dehydrating but think you might like to get more involved, then attending this program is a great way to get started. If you are already familiar with freezing and dehydrating but just want a refresher…you will find the program informative and fun, too.

Sunday: noon-5pm (last entry at 4pm)
First Fridays: 10am-8pm (last entry at 7pm)

on 6 calendars Bats for Pest Control Workshop Mon Aug 3, 2015 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM Where:
NC Cooperative Extension Silk Hope, NC
— 5 days away

The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension will offer a workshop on Protecting and Enhancing Bat Populations to Help with Pest Control on the Farm from 7:00-9:30 pm on Monday August 3 at the Silk Hope Farm Heritage Center in Silk Hope, NC. The workshop will be taught by UNC-Greensboro biologist and bat expert Dr. Matina Kalcounis-Rueppell.

There are approximately 11 species of bats in the piedmont region of North Carolina and all of them eat insects, including mosquitoes and many important agricultural pests like corn earworms, stink bugs, cucumber beetles, planthoppers, and much more. Pest-control services provided by insect-eating bats in the United States likely save the U.S. agricultural industry at least $3 billion a year, and this is a conservative estimate. A large colony of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) can eat 18 million corn rootworms each summer, while a single evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis) can consume over 20,000 insects annually.

AGENDA:

Bats in your Backyard: Biology, Ecology, and Relevance to Farmers and Agriculture
- Bats as fascinating mammals
- Resources that bats need for survival
- Bats as insect consumers in piedmont food webs
- Specific species on piedmont farms
- Ways to attract bats to your farm or garden
- Threats to piedmont bats
- What you can do for bat conservation
