It is also becoming more of a concern for employers and the general public when preventable diseases put increasing strains on the health care system, causing insurance cost to rise. People who do not perform regular physical activity increase their risks for colon and breast cancer; becoming depressed or moody; gaining weight; suffering from a heart attack; or a compromised immune system. So get moving now! Walk, run, jog or skip your way to better health and participate in the second annual Currituck County Run @ Work Day.

Project Learning Tree: Southeastern Forests and Climate Change

September 19, 2014
9am - 5pm
Caraway Camp and Conference Center
Asheboro, NC
To Register: Renee Strnad renee_strnad@ncsu.edu 919-515-5518
Registration Deadline is September 3, 2014.

This workshop is being presented in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Southeastern EE Alliance Conference hosted by Environmental Educators of North Carolina. This workshop will be the first time this workshop has been held in North Carolina, and the facilitators are all from the University of Florida.... the students and faculty members that have been writing, leading the pilot-testing, and revising of the materials. This workshop is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! There is a $20 fee for this workshop to cover the cost of the facility and lunch. Checks can be made payable to EENC and brought with you to the workshop.

PINEMAP has partnered with Project Learning Tree to develop, test, and implement a new secondary environmental education module, Southeastern Forests and Climate Change. This module provides educators with the necessary information and resources to engage secondary students in lessons about climate change, forest ecosystems, the carbon cycle, pine tree genetics, modeling, and life cycle assessments. The module explores these concepts in 13 experiential activities that are based on PINEMAP’s interdisciplinary research. The activities incorporate technology, data analysis, critical thinking, and system-thinking skills to encourage students to understand the connections between human, biological, and physical systems.

The activities are designed for students in grades 9 through 12, though many could be adapted for middle school or college students. With its application of climate change to forest ecosystems and management, this module is intended to be used by life science, biology, agriculture, and environmental science teachers. To help educators address curriculum standards, each activity has been correlated to the Next Generation Science Standards and the Project Learning Tree Conceptual Framework.

This module is designed to help students

Understand how climate change could impact forests in the southeastern U.S.;
Understand how forests can be managed to address changing climate conditions and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
Enhance decision-making skills to make informed choices as consumers to mitigate climate change;
Develop systems-thinking skills to see connections between climate change, forests, and people;
Recognize that individual and community actions can help mitigate and adapt to climate change; and

PAINT
Paint cannot be landfilled because it is a liquid. Dried paint in cans can be dumped with your regular trash. So can empty paint cans. If you have paint that is not dry, leave the lid off for a while and let it dry out, or speed up the process by adding kitty litter or Oil-Dry to soak up the liquid. Once it is not longer a liquid, we will be glad to take it along with your regular household waste.

In Craven County, paint is accepted for recycling at the County Convenience Centers. Contact Craven County Solid Waste at (252) 636-6659 for more information.

Used oil is collected at County convenience sites in Carteret and Craven counties and at the Pamlico County Recycling Facility on NC 306 North of Grantsboro. Disposal of used oil is free to residential customers.
