Amazing Grazing and NC Choices are collaborating to offer two unique and exciting educational workshops in Goldsboro on Sept. 2nd for beef and pork producers. The first workshop will start at 2pm and will cover low-stress animal handling techniques. Lead instructors will introduce producers to the basics of flight zones and other controlled movement fundamentals for beef and pork. At 5pm all participants are invited to join us for a local burger cookout with simple side dishes and as well as some informal networking time. After supper, join Sharon Freeman for a pasture walk and even workshop discussion on summer annual forage plots that are under experimentation for grazing cattle. This session will also include a demonstration and hands-on opportunities with portable, electric fencing that enables producers to easily control grazing patterns for most livestock. Each workshop costs $5 to attend and dinner is free of charge.

Working in partnerships, North Carolina State University, North Carolina Cooperative Extension, the Center for Environmental Farming Systems - NC Growing Together Project (CEFS/NCGT), Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) and Feast Down East will be offering workshops aimed at providing farmers with the tools to reduce food safety risks and meet market requirements.

This two part workshop Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) workshop series will address how farmers of all sizes can achieve USDA GAPs certification, deliver information on principles of fresh produce safety and perform on-farm hazard assessments, as well as provide assistance with creating a fresh food safety plan.

The first workshop will combine classroom and on-farm instruction to provide producers with the tools needed to identify potential food safety concerns, as well as strategies to minimize potential contamination. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance that fulfills a portion of the eligibility requirements to receive up to $600 in GAPs Cost Share assistance from CFSA,

Workshop participates will: 1) Receive a Certificate of Attendance for GAPs training needed for GAPs certification; 2) Be eligible to receive up to $600 in GAPs Certification of Cost share; 3) Be eligible for one-on-one Mock Audits; and 4) Receive workbook tools, and other resources to implement a Food Safety Program, including an electronic Gaps Food Safety Template and personalized classroom guidance.

For the on-farm component on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, we will be visiting Ivanhoe Blueberry Farms, Inc. in Ivanhoe, NC. We will carpool from the Extension office. Portion of this workshop will take place outside. Please wear comfortable shoes, bring a water bottle, and appropriate weather gear. The workshop will take place rain or shine.

There will be a Part 2 workshop on Monday September 8, 2014 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm at the Pender County Extension Office.

Part 2 - Fresh Produce Safety Program and Plan Development (Prerequisite - Part 1) - Laptop required for this section. Please notify Trish Tripp, CFSA Local Produce Safety Coordinator at 336-458-6980 or if you do not have a laptop. More information below.

The second workshop conducted on participant's own computers, will provide direct assistance to producers in completing a fresh produce safety plan. Attendees will leave this session with a well-developed working draft of their specific food safety plan, which becomes the framework for an audit, and can be used to demonstrate individual farm risk-reduction steps.

Completion of the first workshop is a prerequisite and basic computer knowledge is recommended in order to receive the maximum benefit from this session.

Registration is $10 for the first workshop and an additional $10 for the second workshop. Make checks payable to Carolina Farm Stewardship Association. Lunch will be provided.

Our R.A.C.E. 4-H Jumping Clinic will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Ellis Park in Salisbury. There will be four 90 minute sessions consisting of four riders per session. Riders will be grouped according to ability. All riders MUST wear helmets. This clinic is open to 4-H members first and then to our leaders and parents if space permits. A Liability Release Form must be signed for every rider. Negative coggins must be shown for each horse. Cost is $15.00 per horse/rider combination. Our clinician is Amy Henderson.

We are looking for volunteers with canoes or kayaks that would like to help clean on and around Sugarloaf Island in Morehead City. We are working with Coastal Beverage on this project and Island Ferry Adventures are also helping us with transportation to the people without boat access. The program offers a minimum of 40 hours of instruction on horticulture topics including: lawns; ornamental trees and shrubs; insect, disease, and weed management; soils and plant nutrition; vegetable gardening; home fruit production; garden flowers; and water conservation. You will receive a North Carolina Master Gardenersm training manual --- full of comprehensive horticultural subjects. It will be a valuable tool in answering homeowners plant questions.

Pitt County Cooperative Extension offers Master Gardener Training every year. The next training will be held in 2014 beginning Tuesday, September 9th and ending Tuesday November 18th. The class meets every Tuesday from 9:00 am until 12 noon with a few afternoon sessions as needed. As of this post the estimated cost of the 2014 class is $100 but may increase depending on expenses. Payment is not accepted until applicant is accepted into the class. All applicants will be interviewed.

The Rowan County Fair is right around the corner. With the fair, comes the 4-H Junior Dog Show. For those youth competitors who are interested in participating, Lynn Meeks of the Salisbury Kennel Club will hold two dog showmanship clinics. These clinics are open to youth, ages 5 to 19, and will be held on Tuesday, September 9, and Tuesday, September 16 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Salisbury Kennel Club, 4208 Old Concord Road, Salisbury, NC. At this clinic, youth will work on handling their dog as well as learn some aspects of showmanship to prepare their dog for the annual 4-H Junior Dog Show at the Rowan County Fair.

To combat this problem there will be a series of workshops to demonstrate how and when to wrap a barrier around you tree to get the biggest impact, learn when and how to glue, and when to remove the barrier so that you don't girdle the trees.
