Approximately one hundred different cultivars of poinsettias—including numerous new experimental cultivars—will be on display. Stop by to see the famous 9' tall poinsettia tree. JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University

NC State Floriculture is part of a national poinsettia program that tests poinsettia cultivars to determine which ones are best for consumers and for producers. You will have a chance to see these cultivars yourself and vote for your favorites. Approximately one hundred different cultivars of poinsettias—including numerous new experimental cultivars—will be on display. Stop by to see the famous 9' tall poinsettia tree. Enjoy poinsettia gardens and decorated poinsettias. Help us decide which poinsettias are North Carolina's favorites by voting for your favorite poinsettias.

NC Cooperative Extension Mitchell's Nursery & Greenhouse Inc., 1088 W Dalton Rd, King, NC, United States
— 2 weeks away

Mitchell's Nursery is growing over 8,000 poinsettias in 90 different varieties in 2014. No other place around sells the variety, quantity, and quality that we grow. We sell to churches (give quantity discount), garden centers, florists, businesses, and the public. We custom wrap and put a hand tied bow on the poinsettia of your choice. Poinsettia sizes range from 4" to 10". The 6.5" is the most popular. Delivery is available for 15 or more.

Save the space on your calendars for our Poinsettia Open House. It will be Sunday, December 7, 2014 from 12:30 to 4:30. We are one of two commercial greenhouses in the state to hold poinsettia trials. The information gathered each year helps the national poinsettia breeders decide which poinsettias they will release to the market next year.

For anyone interested in attending, Randy is willing to offer educational credit for the time attended. We are planning on meeting at Mitchell's at 2pm. If you've never attended this, it's a pretty interesting event. Being able to see all the different poinsettias is really cool. Not to mention supporting local horticulture is a good thing. Poinsettias will be available for purchase and in the past they have had other holiday plants like cyclamen available as well.

Extension Forestry Forestry & Natural Resources Webinar - Rapid Appraisal Research on Sustainable Forestry and African American Land Retention Tue Dec 9, 2014 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Where:
NC Cooperative Extension http://www.forestrywebinars.net/
— 2 weeks away

African American rural land ownership has declined significantly over the past 100 years, threatening critical family and community assets. The U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and Natural Resource Conservation Service, is seeking to address this problem through the Sustainable Forestry and African American Land Retention Program. A team of social scientists recently completed baseline qualitative research in association with this program, entailing over 60 in-person interviews with African American forest owners at the pilot sites in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alabama. Results from this study provide insights into the history, current circumstances, and goals of African American land ownership and forest management. These insights will enhance understanding and inform outreach efforts, which we hope will accelerate an emerging trend for African American landowners to return to forestry as a sound, land-based business strategy.

Pre-registration not required.

Presenter(s):

John Schelhas, Research Forester, USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station, Integrating Human and Natural Systems Research Work Unit

Approved continuing education credits:
