Johnston County Center Asparagus and Rhubarb Twilight Meeting Thu Aug 28, 2014 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Where:
NC Cooperative Extension 980 Flem Clayton Rd, Roxboro, NC 27574, USA
— 1 week away

People who are interested in learning about the growing and marketing of asparagus are invited to come to an Asparagus Twilight Meeting on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 6:00 P.M. at the farm of Mr. Garnett Carr, 980 Flem Clayton Rd., Roxboro, NC, according to Carl Cantaluppi, Area Horticulture Agent for the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Granville and Person Counties.

The meeting is designed to showcase the ¼ acre variety trial plot planted in 2005, first harvested in 2007, and will compare the 12 different varieties grown, by discussing the yield results from the eighth harvest season. Asparagus is a high-value vegetable crop that is easy to grow and has high consumer demand.

Carl will talk about site and soil considerations for growing asparagus, as well as fertility requirements, insect, disease, weed control, harvesting and marketing techniques, costs in growing the crop, etc. An asparagus planting demonstration will also be given by using a middlebuster (lister) plow to open a furrow and plant dormant 1-year old crowns (roots). Complimentary crowns will be available to take home for planting.

This year's meeting will also include the topic of growing rhubarb as an annual plant in North Carolina. Rhubarb is difficult to grow as a perennial in the South due to poor survivability from high temperatures. Participants will be able to look at rhubarb planted at four different transplanting dates during July and August, as 10-week-old transplants, started from seed. They will grow, overwinter, and then be harvested in 2015, before the plants decline due to high temperatures. New 10-week-old transplants will be planted in July and August of 2015 to harvest in 2016. Yield data will be taken to compare the differences between transplanting dates. In this way, it is hoped that rhubarb can be successfully grown in NC as an annual plant.

People are encouraged to ask questions throughout the presentation. Research results will be handed out to the participants. Cold drinks will be provided. The meeting is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is required. From Roxboro, NC, go about 3 miles north on NC 57. Turn right (east) on Flem Clayton Road. Go about 4/10ths of a mile until the road dead-ends. Look for the signs. The asparagus plot is on the right.

For more information, contact Carl Cantaluppi at 919-603-1350 or e-mail him at: carl_cantaluppi@ncsu.edu
