The National Junior Horticultural Association offers youth the opportunity to compete in numerous horticulture related events at an annual convention, generally held the first weekend in October. North Carolina's 4-H Plant and Soil programs have aligned their competitive events to correlate with the competitions at NJHA. Youth that have placed first in the respective events at NC Congress are eligible to continue on to compete at NJHA.
Horticulture Judging and Identification Contest
A three part contest, includes a knowledge test, judging section and identification portion. 4-H Youth are only eligible to participate in the contst as a 4-H team if they have placed first at NC State Congress in July. Other 4-H'ers are welcome to compete in the open division. For more information on this contest, click here.
Demonstration Contest
The NJHA Demonstration Contest differs slightly from NC 4-H Congress Presentations. NJHA Demonstrations must include do something with the object for the majority of the time. For example, if the demonstration topic is begonia propagation, the participant must show how to propagate, not merely talk about it. For specific rules, visit the NJHA website at http://njha.org/projects_demonstration.html or call Liz Driscoll at (919) 513-7346 or email liz_driscoll@ncsu.edu.
Categories include:
Artistic Arrangement
Fruit & Vegetable Use
Horticulture Production & Marketing
Landscaping
Peanut Foods
Speech Contest
The illustrated talk is an option for youth that have won their presentation category at Congress, but it was considered more of a talk than a demonstration. The same categories apply from above.
