Plant and Soil Activities

Its a lazy saturday afternoon and you need something to keep you out of mischief. I have included some of my favorite things to do with plants and soils and hope you have a little fun as you are building a garbage can garden, grazing in the garden, creating soil crayons and making a mess by mixing homemade peanut butter.

Roaming Gnome
Garden Gnomes love to travel. Click on the gnome to the right, print and cut him out and glue him to a popsicle stick. Every place you visit, take a photo of your gnome and send him to me and we will post their travels across the world!

Garbage Can Garden
Did you know that you can take your carrot top and make it grow? Check out these fun ways to take your veggie and fruit snacks and make a garbage can garden.

Make Peanut Butter
Make your own delicious peanut butter from peanuts grown in North Carolina!

Finger Spinning Cotton
Ask your local grower or county ag agent for a cotton boll and figure out how we get our clothing from these awesome plants.

Guide to Garden Grazing
Snacking on chives, nibbling on begonias, brushing your teeth with sage, your garden is a great place to grab a tasty treat!

Soil Crayons
This is a fantastic art project from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Start digging!

Shelf-Life Garden
Ever wonder what plants are actually in your favorite box of mac'n cheese? Take a closer look and grow a garden based on the ingredients you find.

Sprout a Sandwich
Bean sprouts are fast and easy to grow...and you can eat them! Read on to find out how!

Take a Child Outside
Originally created to celebrate Take a Child Outside Week, there are fun outdoor opportunities included here.

More ideas to come! If you have an activity you would like to contribute, email to liz_driscoll@ncsu.edu.
